Accessibility for Foxton Canal Museum

Introduction

The museum is situated adjacent to the middle lock at Foxton Locks. The museum tells the story of the Inclined Plane Boat Lift and Foxton Locks through interpretation boards, film, interactives and artifacts. It is an accredited museum.

 

The museum is based on one floor. Museum assistants are on hand if assistance is required.

Before you arrive

  • Follow brown tourist signs for Foxton Locks from A6 and A4304

  • The nearest railway station is Market Harborough which is 4.3 miles away

  • The 44 bus runs from Market Harborough to Foxton Village, Monday to Saturday, alight at Gumley junction (approx 1 mile walk)

 

Car Parking and Arrival

  • Long stay car park on Gumley Road - £3.00 for the day

  • Short stay car park down the access road to the bottom of locks - £3.50 for 4 hours

  • Disabled access car spaces in bottom car park.

  • Toilets - 1 disabled access

  • Short stay car park is tarmac and is lit at night.

  • Long stay car park is a grassed area and may be uneven.

  • Pathways on the site are even and mud free.

  • Access to the museum is up a sloped pathway.

  • Museum is signposted from both car parks.

Main Entrance, Reception and Ticketing Area 

  • The main entrance has automatic doors.

  • The floor is level concrete slabs

  • The main entrance is well lit.

 

Attraction (displays, exhibits)

  • Interpretation panels were designed with restricted vision in mind.

  • There is an interactive boiler game

  • At the back of the museum there is a short film of the history of the locks and boat lift.

  • There are various digital screen showing short films of canal related material.

  • There is part of a canal boat which the visitor can go in and listen to the tale of the boat woman.

 

Public Toilets

  • The museum does not have any public toilets

  • The nearest public toilets are located down in the bottom car park

  • There is a shop with a range of souvenirs and books, etc which an be accessed directly from the main entrance and when exiting the exhibition area

  • The shop is level throughout.

  • Staff can offer assistance if required

  • There is a promotional video being played

Additional Information

Dogs are welcome on leads. A water bowl is available at the main entrance.
